Most New Project – Bicycles

Last weekend I started (at last!) my fixie project. I have been talking to myself for ages to start this project and just the weekend before I started to search for some frames at some junkyards. I couldn’t find any junkyard and much less a frame. But I found a forum where I could get in touch with George which lives in the same area than I (Bassendean). He have been riding for a while, but at the moment he is just building bicycles and he have a big collection of old frames. He told me that he would have a 90′s Repco frame sizing 58cm on the top tube and 60cm on the seat tube which I thought perfect for my size as I like big frames. The frame arrived at last on the last Saturday and Christine and I went there to collect it. Was we arrived there we noticed some bicycles on the yard and a very nice 90′s Repco race complete bike. At first place we thought that it wouldn’t be the one that George as talking about, but as he came to meet us he said that he was surprised as well as he was expecting for just a frame. Then I asked he for how much he would be selling it and he replied saying that I would pay what I thought it was fair. The first value on my mind was $50, as we were talking about an old frame, despite the bike be very light, have nice tires and brakes in good condition. As I said what I was thinking he replied saying it was more than enough, so we made the deal. Christine at first place was thinking to purchase an Electra, but she quickly changed her mind when she saw one of the girl’s frame bicycle made by George. He uses old frames to rebuild them with better accessories and he is very talented on that. If wasn’t the size of the frame too small for Christine she would have bought the bike, so then George said that he had more frames on the backyard. We went to take a look on the frames and we found this very nice Australian frame. The size was perfect and the metal was in not so bad condition. Christine loved the design of the bike and we got the frame for free. Now I have not only one, but two projects to accomplish.

As my bicycle was complete and good to run I started with Christine’s project. The first thing to do as George said would be to restore the frame and paint it as desired.

At home I started to strip the whole bike apart taking pictures of the process and also to help to remember to build it back later. I noticed that the mud guards perhaps would be too bad for restoration. Perhaps it would be easier and cheaper to by a new one, but Christine liked the design of those so I will give it a try to see if it worths to restore it.

Back to my fixie (which was suppose to be the main article of this post ), I will probably build my project based on this bike. I just loved the combination of the color with the accessories. I have never ridden a fixie before and I think I will be sad to not have more than 1 gear on my bike, so I will try the Sturmey Archer’s S3X hub. Also the distance from home to the office is not so short and having a fixed gear with only one gear would make the things harder.

Night Rider

Last night I had my 3rd ride with the Perth Street Bike guys. The weather wasn’t friendly, very cloudy and under a very dark sky. We haven’t got rain during the way though. Actually I think we were following the rain as the road was pretty wet. Because of that I realized the I must change my rear tyre urgently. I have been sliding most of the curves and once, I’ve lost grip on my rear tyre at almost 80KM/h. It was definitely easy to make burnouts.We stopped at Scarborough Beach for a quick meal. I had a kebab at Peter’s by the Sea after strugled to find some ATM (yeah, they don’t have EFTPOS). The only ATM working at the area was the one inside the Rendezvous Hotel. On the way back I hadn’t time to finish my kebab, but I had time to take some pics as you can see attached. The trip back was way better with a drier road. The ride end up at the Balmoral Hotel in East Victoria Park. I couldn’t have even a beer as I had to head to the cleaning in High Wycombe. I arrived at home tired, but satisfied as these rides are always exciting. I look forward for my next riding.

Rainy day

Engraçado as recordações que me chegam à cabeça nos dias de chuva. Cheguei da escola em tempo de não me ensopar, e assim que começou a chover, prestei atenção nas gotas caindo nas árvores, nos fundos no quintal. O verde das folhas acentuado por causa da água, o balanço em consequência do vento e o contraste com o fundo cinza de um fim de tarde mau-humorado. Típico dia que nos faz contemplar sobre várias coisas. Hoje me flagrei lembrando de uma parte de minha infância, quando naqueles momentos em que estamos em nossa cama um pouco antes de pegar no sono e nos faz pensar em um monte de coisas enquanto olhamos para o teto. Lembrei que naquele tempo meu sonho era ficar muito rico a ponto de conseguir comprar uma ilha. A ilha em si não era pretexto para me exibir ou convidar os amigos para passear, mas sim para me distanciar de tudo e de todos. Lembro que eu ficava planejando minha aposentadoria nessa ilha, completamente sozinho, sem mesmo uma esposa ou namorada. Ficava pensando em uma solucão para não dar trabalho para meus filhos (se por acaso viria a ter), quando me tornasse velho e cheio de problemas. O objetivo seria ficar na ilha até a vida deixar a carcaça do velho. Agora não sei porque eu pensava esse tipo de coisa, uma vez que meus avós nunca deram problemas para meus pais. Um visita ou outra no médico, mas longe de algo incômodo. Além disso, eu acho que esse pensamento era demais de inadequado para alguém com a idade que eu tinha (por volta dos 18 anos). Será que alguém ja pensou esse tipo de coisa, ou é só eu que não bato bem das idéias mesmo?

Anyway, voltando ao assunto, desde que cheguei por aqui, o que sinto mais falta é de pessoas. Sinto muita falta, mas muita falta mesmo dos amigos, da família, das pessoas queridas… Por aqui, até brasileiro ja se acostumou a ser frio como os habitantes dessa cidade. E não tenho mais nenhuma vontade de morrer sozinho em uma ilha. Não tenho diálogo nem com minha flatmate, não sei o que acontece. Talvez não nos damos mesmo. Ás vezes sinto-me meio estranho e diferente. Na rua as pessoas me vigiam com olhos desconfiados e na escola sou meio que evitado. Até perguntei para a Vic se eu me pareço meio estranho ou tenho uma cara negativa. Talvez seja carência mesmo… )

Bom, chega de choramingar. Amanhã é dia de branco. Mais um dia se foi e mais outro à começar.
